Leicester cash-and-carry's two-day closure after mice infestation

A cash-and-carry was temporarily closed down following a mouse infestation.

Environmental health officers issued an emergency closure notice after discovering mice at Best Buy Cash and Carry, in London Street, Spinney Hills.

However, during a court hearing two days later they told magistrates the shop should be allowed to reopen after the owners dealt with the problem.

Leicester City Council environmental health officer Chris Ashford said he visited the shop on Monday and found mouse droppings, dead mice and a live mouse.

He also saw packets of noodles and biscuits gnawed by rodents.

He told Leicester magistrates on Wednesday: "I saw two dead mice under, and behind, the large display chiller and three dead mice under the chest freezers.

"I saw gnawed packets of noodles and biscuits under the shelving and saw a live mouse in a box containing falooda – a type of noodle.

"There were lots of mouse droppings in the box and several packets of dried noodles had been gnawed by mice."

He said that at the time he considered there was a risk to public health and issued an emergency closure notice.

He said: "When I returned the next day, a great deal of cleaning had been done and I no longer deemed it a risk to public health."

The court agreed that the notice was properly served and ordered the business to pay £537.33 costs.
