A Chinese restaurant in Coventry has been fined £1000
The Fortune Garden in Tile Hill Lane in Coventry was fined more than £1,000 after pleading guilty to several food hygiene offences following rodent infestations.
Rat droppings were found in the food store, kitchen, toilet, and rear yard where food equipment was stored.
The EHO visited the takeaway after receiving complaints of rats running around the backyard area.
They also found the droppings of mice in the food store area and ants running over the shelves and dead in the sugar and flour.
Environmental Health Officers said the back door was open throughout the evening which had potentially provided easy entry for rodents.
The owners were fined £600 after pleading guilty to three food hygiene offences at Coventry Magistrates Court.
They were also ordered to pay £500 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
“The presence of rats and mice in a food business is extremely serious as it poses a significant risk to public health so in this case a prosecution was the only option for us,” said Council Damien Gannon.
The Fortune Garden has since reopened after it closed voluntarily to carry out improvements.
Another case where a simple pest control contract could have saved the owners not only money but loss of face with customers.
